Bert Kaempfert – Wonderland by Night

First Hit #1: January 9, 1961

This is an end of the night song. It’s a difficult thing to explain, but it makes sense mostly as a way to round out an evening and allow the couples in the place have one last dance before everyone packs up and leaves. It’s slow, it’s a bit downbeat, and it’s probably possible to play if the band is very drunk – which is a compliment. It’s just so appropriate as part of the summary of an evening overall, so much so that having it open up a new year seems strangely inappropriate and jarring.
