The Four Seasons – Sherry

First Hit #1: September 15, 1962

I hate this song. It’s the voice I think, going as high as possible and into places that normal voices dare not tread. Then someone does a deep voice like a mentally challenged muppet, to contrast with the awful far too high voice, and it just grates. It’s not really pushing the envelope either lyrically or musically, so the entire song is hinged on the ridiculous vocal contortions the singers are going through. As a result, the song is frequently piercing and bracing, but not particularly good or interesting. It’s got the sound of a novelty song, but without the humor or the interest. Yes, I’d prefer it if it had stupid lyrics that tried too hard to be funny and failed, at least then the ridiculous vocals would be sensible.
