The Beach Boys – I Get Around

First Hit #1: July 4, 1964

Just in time for Independence Day, America’s big influential band of the ’60s has their first hit, I Get Around. You can just hear the apple pie, baseball and gaudy flags coming from your stereo. Actually what you can hear is a song which, in spite of it’s simple premise – friends drive around, try to pick up women, other similar teenage kicks – is incredibly complicated. About a million things are going on here, with different layers in instrumentation and harmonies and a song structure that’s actually fairly difficult to wrap your head around. Brian Wilson has been described as something of a mad genius, and this first number one is already a fully formed example of that. It’s a pure pop song, but if you want to examine it further there’s so much more to listen to.
