First Hit #1: December 19, 1964
The second important group rounding out the last month of ’64 is the Supremes, who had three consecutive number ones so far. Interestingly, it’s also about loneliness, about a woman who is eagerly awaiting the return of her lover. It isn’t the strongest song of their repertoire, having slightly confused lyrics that might be read as being about the confusion of love and infatuation. That’s being kind, but it’s really the killer chorus that makes the song something of note. Whatever’s happening in the verses, Diana Ross imploring the young man in the song to come see about her works, and keeps it on track. It’s the kind of song you can’t really ignore, she’s very insistent throughout and you can’t really picture the man in question doing anything but rushing to see her. Whatever one might think of the overall package, the message is delivered well.
