Herman’s Hermits – I’m Henry VIII, I am

First Hit #1: August 7, 1965

Here’s why I don’t like Herman’s Hermits. Part of the reason is that they crammed 30 seconds of song into two minutes. The whole “second verse, same as the first” thing is kind of interesting, but it’s also an admission that there’s not much song here. The other part of the reason is that the vocals are really annoying, especially the whole “hen-er-y” bit, which is such a silly affectation. Overall then, it’s silly, repetitive and annoying, the kind of thing that begins to grate somewhere in the middle of the second verse. It’s rare when you can say something under two minutes long is far too lengthy, but this is.

Well, it does have decent energy, I’ll give it that.
