The Beatles – We Can Work it Out

First Hit #1: January 8, 1966

Speaking of bands which can cut through the sweetness with a sharp shot of melancholy, here come the Beatles. In some ways, it is a very optimistic song, with the catchy chorus about working it out and the happy bopping beat behind it. But then again, it’s clearly about a failing relationship and while there’s optimism, sometimes when listening closely one wonders if there’s cause for it. It’s clearly a couple that is having difficulty understanding each other, and while the last ditch effort to save the relationship is a pretty good pop song, there’s a sense that it isn’t actually going to work. For a band that would soon sing that all you need is love, it’s interesting to hear a song that answers you need a hell of a lot more than that.
