First Hit #1: April 12, 1969
Pop stars can have a message, and the message of Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures) – a medley of two songs from the musical Hair which has a very unwieldy title – is that drugs are amazing. It never explicitly says that you should take lots of drugs, but that’s the only way that the entire Aquarius section could possibly make any sense – it’s basically some astrology mumbo-jumbo turned into a fairly catchy tune – and there are a smattering of other subtle drug hits throughout the lyrics – stuff about liberating minds and getting the feeling and whatnot. I’m not saying you can’t enjoy the song without drugs, I’m a total square and I like it quite a bit, but I’m not sure you could write the song without doing a healthy selection of mind altering materials. While catchy and a well produced single, it is also clearly derived from the hippie movement and general drug use adventures. Which is fine, lots of great songs come from the same place, it’s just that not that many wear it quite so obviously.
Also notable, the suggested videos on Youtube which accompany the recording below consist largely of mostly naked people in the middle of PG-rated sexytimes.
