Honey Cone – Want Ads

First Hit #1: June 12, 1971

The sound of disco would soon dominate the ’70s, but it’s not a genre that emerged fully formed. It’s a gradual evolution, and one of the steps toward disco has to be The Honey Cone and their single Want Ads. The song, about finding a man through the want ads, is clearly moving towards the signature sound of the seventies through instrumentation and arrangement, while not quite being disco, keeping a foot firmly in the waters of the motown sound. It sounds seventies, you can hear the big hair and platform heels, but it’s not quite disco yet. Instead, it’s showing a path, and eventually the most dance-able parts of the song will survive while other elements die out, for that is how nature works.
