Helen Reddy – Delta Dawn

First Hit #1: September 15, 1973

I’m not American, I’ve never been to the country, but I can say with some confidence that Delta Dawn is an unmistakably southern song. Yes, it takes place in the south, but that’s not why, it’s because it’s a big declaration of everything the south is in popular culture. You have the accent, the big gospel influence, and the odd religious overtones that creep up every so often. It is a region that has produced many influential musicians, and this song kind of borrows from everything the region is famous for, bringing out a sound that is strongly tied to one specific region of the world.

It’s a song with a very well defined and focused sense of place, and it’s stronger for it.
