First Hit #1: March 2, 1974
The first few notes of the song are pretty great. Then Terry Jacks starts singing, and it all goes to crap. It’s not because Jacks is bad at singing, but because of what he’s singing. Here is the last minute whining of a dying man, and while I suppose dying does allow you to whine to a certain extent, I kept thinking “Oh just die already” before we even reached the chorus. I suppose that makes me a bit cold that I can’t tolerate a dying man, but it’s fiction and Jacks was still alive last time I checked, so screw it. It’s miserable, Jacks tries a bit too hard to sound sympathetic, and I really don’t like the song overall. Maybe that makes me a monster, maybe I’m okay with that.
