Olivia Newton-John – I Honestly Love You

First Hit #1: October 5, 1974

I don’t know if I should be pleased or disappointed that this hasn’t become a talent show staple like Without You or I Will always Love You. It’s a simple ballad, but one that a singer can use to say “Look at me and my VOICE!” The choruses can be sung from the mountaintops, and then it can be brought back down again to show that the singer is capable of nuance. The arrangement is no great shakes here, but it can be easily be turned into the worst kind of treacle if a producer set their mind to it. The song is a modern diva away from being sung by every semi-talented teenager who feels compelled to belt it out on a singing game show.

Which means the composition could have a purpose, but it’s not a great song.
