First Hit #1: April 26, 1975
If I had to pick one word to describe B.J. Thomas’ style, I’d go with jaunty. It’s an odd choice, especially since we’re talking about a song where a man requests a song that makes everyone cry so they’re as miserable as he is, but it’s really the only word for it. Whatever the lyrics might be – and happy is not the word I’m looking for here – the song has a certain bounce in its step that makes it a bit fun to listen to it. Sure, there’s an undercurrent of sadness here, but the music itself is unquestionably optimistic, as though Thomas wants to reassure listeners that it all works out in the end. Maybe he meets a young lady who also loves sad songs, that would be nice.
