The Manhattans – Kiss and Say Goodbye

First Hit #1: July 24, 1976

Kiss and Say Goodbye is an unabashedly sexy song. Musically, it’s the kind of thing you can imagine people getting conceived to. It’s got that deep voiced talk-singing thing going on in the first verse, it’s about sex anyway, it is, in fact, the sexiest cold shower you’ll ever get.

What does that mean? Well, you’ll hear what sounds sexy, but then you notice the lyrics, which are about a breakup, between two people who it is heavily implied are both having affairs – both have “ties”, after all. The person being sung to is crying. You notice that the lyrical content, in spite of the sound, is really quite sad and kind of awkward and uncomfortable. Suddenly, you feel awkward and uncomfortable, and are inspired to reconsider your relationship.

Kiss and Say Goodbye is a good song, but it’s not exactly an uplifting one.
