First Hit #1: February 26, 1977
At some points, this seems to be a song about being the Eagles, a track about being a fresh face with big expectations riding on your success. Then it kind of just becomes about a love story that doesn’t really know what it wants to say, and the song steadily declines into something a bit more muddled without a clear perspective. It could still be about being the Eagles, it could be about a lot of things, it sounds like the work of a songwriter who has a lot of things to say but no clear vision of how he wants to say it, bouncing between ideas with a chorus that eventually doesn’t even apply to those ideas after a while. The Eagles have been victims of this more than once, but it’s frustrating to listen to a song that has no clear vision of what it actually wants to be.
