Barbra Streisand – Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star is Born)

First Hit #1: March 5, 1977

Evergreen is fine. It’s a love song that’s a bit silly and cutesy, but otherwise not something that should be regarded as particularly controversial. Streisand is an okay singer, she’s singing lyrics that are frequently dumb, but otherwise similarly okay. Everything about it is merely okay, it’s a song that hits some expected beats and does its job as a love theme. I’m not sure I’d call it particularly good – in fact, I know I would not call it particularly good – but it’s also not bad, a slice of music that became a hit because it’s tied to a popular movie, which I haven’t seen and thus cannot really tie a value judgement to it. It’s fine, a big slab of okay.

“Streisand is an okay singer” … To each his own, but many professional singers consider her more of a benchmark of interpretive skill, and the astonishing ticket prices she commands on her rare tours would seem to indicate the vox populi on the matter.
