First Hit #1: March 26, 1977
Hall and Oates have a bit of fun with this, a song about someone so wealthy they can be insane. While apparently about a rich boy – though sung about a girl because it sounds better – it’s taking that person down a peg while being danceable and actually kind of funny in the process. It’s a hit because it’s more universal than you might expect – I think everyone knows a story of a rich person who can rely on their old man’s money – but it’s also just having fun with the idea. It recognizes the folly of the song’s character and just admits that you can do a lot with it, and make a really appealing little song about it. A great deal of fun and that’s all it needs to be.
