Leo Sayer – When I Need You

First Hit #1: May 14, 1977

I wonder how many weddings had this as the first dance? It’s the perfect first dance song, something that’s got a sentimental hook, is slow enough to have a dance to, and generally sound good to the married couple. It is about a long distance relationship, which might seem odd for a wedding day, but it still has that sound, the perfect thing for a slow dance and a happy couple. Leo Sayer might not be pushing the envelope here, but people get married all the time, and they all need songs to dance to. There’s enough here to make for a really great wedding moment, and what more do you want?

I’m surprised this song never generated a lawsuit over its similarity to the chorus of Leonard Cohen’s “Famous Blue Raincoat”, which begins at 1:15 in this Jennifer Warnes version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPlpxHhzSp0
