KC and the Sunshine Band – I’m Your Boogie Man

First Hit #1: June 11, 1977

Disco by the numbers, KC and the Sunshine Band do some big brassy disco that doesn’t really push any envelopes. It’s got some characteristics of the genre, a big beat, lyrics that could be a double entendre, and a general ambivalence towards trying anything new. It’s a song where you can see what they were trying to do, it makes sense on a purely academic level. If there was a formula to predict hits, it probably would be quite fond of this track, it’s the kind of thing that gets popular. But while its popularity makes sense, it’s really not something that has much staying power, and in all honesty I can do without the song.
