Exile – Kiss You All Over

First Hit #1: September 30, 1978

I’m going to describe Exile’s big hit as strangely sexy. It’s something conventionally erotic, especially as the chorus gets big and “until the night closes in” gets shouted to the rooftops. But it works, it uses some disco inspired bass work to get a bit of a deep, dark groove going, and then just singing about kissing all over does the rest of the work. It’s kind of unexpected, and while it uses some trendy production it uses it in ways that not many other songs did. It’s scribbling outside the lines that have been set down in 1978, and in doing so it makes for a frequently compelling and, yes, strangely sexy song. Exile put a twist on everything you expect to hear in ’78.

They also wrote another darkly sexy, bass-heavy song that was a big hit for country-rock band Alabama in 1982: “Take Me Down.” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ73e5vFO9k)
