Mario – Let Me Love You

First Hit #1: January 1, 2005

While the Year of Usher has ended, audiences still had a taste for R&B, so it was a great time for Mario to make his entrance. In spite of a video intro that has him boxing, Mario is going for the full blown sensitive type, and here he’s positioning himself as the kinder, gentler option for a lover. It’s the kind of thing that has been done before, and it’s been done since, and Mario’s version of the song is probably about average among that lot. It’s not trying to tread on new ground really, but Mario performs it well and it’s overall quite pleasant. It’s just one of those songs that pops up every once in a while, but nobody is going to regret listening to Mario’s variation on that theme.

A decent singer delivers a decent lyric about looking out for his woman, carried on a decent melody. Finally, a singer who woos his woman by talking about her instead of himself! I wonder why Mario only managed two Top Ten singles. The lack of hip-hop elements makes this sort of smooth R&B kinda retro; if someone had said it was released in 1994 or 1999, I would not have known any better.
