Nelly feat. Paul Wall, Ali & Gipp – Grillz

First Hit #1: January 21, 2006

Nelly is at his best when he’s funny, and he is actually pretty funny on Grillz. The issue is that I don’t know quite how much of a joke this is supposed to be. Grillz as a concept seem like a terrible idea – jeweled teeth basically, not something I’d recommend eating Oreos with – so it seems like it could be a parody of the entire idea of “bling” and excessive amounts of jewelry. It’s like the point where jewels go too far, the idea of wearing all your money finally reaches its seemingly unhygienic nadir. But it is at least played straight, and even if everyone in the video looks completely ridiculous in their grillz they are kind of playing it straight, even if the song does acknowledge how goofy the entire thing is. If Nelly’s trying to be satiric here, the song is a winner, but if he genuinely likes the jewel-laden teeth, it’s just a dumb idea.

One Response to Nelly feat. Paul Wall, Ali & Gipp – Grillz

  1. RBerman says:

Between this song and “Laffy Taffy” it would appear that novelty tracks were alive and well in 2005-6. Songs like this do a service to future historians by celebrating some wacky fad or another. But unlike Laffy Taffy, the rhythmic appeal of this song is obvious.
