Beyonce feat. Slim Thug – Check On It

First Hit #1: February 4, 2006

Check On It is strange in the sense that it doesn’t seem finished yet has a ton of stuff going on. The lyrics, for instance, are basically the chorus over and over with minor variations, making one wonder if most of this is just a filler vocal. But then again, there are multi-tracked vocals here and a relatively complex construction on that chorus. The beat has a number of different elements, but there’s a steady tone in the back as though someone forgot to program something on that level of the synthesizer and only noticed it after the song had been released. Slim Thug has a verse, it’s pretty lazy, as though it was a first draft. It references Destiny’s Child, which suggests maybe the other girls were at one point intended to be featured on the song, but they’re nowhere to be found. Check On It is a dish with too many ingredients that still is under-cooked.

One Response to Beyonce feat. Slim Thug – Check On It

  1. RBerman says:

I like the chorus despite the way it hangs out a long time first on one note and then another. You know it’s going somewhere, so the repetition builds and then releases musical tension. The verse doesn’t do a lot for me, though that’s hardly unusual in pop songs. As for the lyrics: another song about butts. The main noteworthy bit in retrospect is the appearance of the term “twerk,” which was all over pop culture in 2013 as a result of Miley Cyrus’ wiggly dance on a TV awards show.
