First Hit #1: July 8, 2006
As is a perennial favorite at the top of the chart, here is a song about people who want to have sex. Of course, if sex were easy you couldn’t really build a four minute pop song around it – or at least couldn’t build one that could get radio play – so we’ve got four minutes of two sides effectively teasing each other. It’s foreplay of sorts, designed for dance halls where people are doing their own foreplay, and everyone is kind of having fun with the whole premise. Which isn’t to say it’s a new premise – it’s not – it’s just that it’s done well enough to get a bit of a chuckle out of me. Furtado is going in a new direction here, her previous album was a bit less hip hop influenced than this, a bit less directed at dance clubs filled with drunk and horny people. But she’s comfortable here too, well aware that she isn’t making anything serious, and happily is not concerned with showing off what her voice can do. It’s dumb fun, but it’s not low-effort dumb fun, craft is required to make a song this silly.
