Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind

First Hit #1: November 28, 2009

Jay-Z likes New York. So does Alicia Keys, as it turns out, given her fairly passionate rendition of the chorus. This could honestly be a commission from the New York tourism board, it’s basically a commercial for the city at its core, referencing places, things and sports teams associated with the city. Of course, it comes after a string of frankly terrible singles cresting the top of the chart, so it makes an effective argument. After all, this is a song with no vocal processing, a song that actually seems high effort and somewhat ambitious, and after a string of duds that’s legitimately exciting. If that’s what New York inspires in musicians, maybe they should all take a trip to New York, I’m not that impressed with the city but at least we get a single that’s got a bit of effort put behind it.

One Response to Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind

Keys subsequently took the chorus hook and crafted a whole song around it, one I like even better, “Empire State of Mind II”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JErbv0GTjes Both songs reference Frank Sinatra’s late-career hit “New York, New York” from the 1977 DeNiro/Minnelli movie of the same name, and obviously the title of the song is a nod to Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.”
