Rihanna – Rude Boy

First Hit #1: March 27, 2010

Rude Boy is basically Rihanna’s attempt at a recent Black Eyed Peas song. That’s not a compliment, though she does at least have the ability to carry a song with her voice. She doesn’t have the ability to make this skeleton of a song actually shine, however, because you need more than a few lines and a hyper-minimal beat to actually make something worth listening to. This is just a couple lines about dicks, the start of a beat – though like the last BEP song it feels more like a click track that someone decided was good enough as is – and this is expected to sustain a pop song for nearly four minutes. It’s no surprise that it doesn’t – my tolerance for it was getting stretched to the breaking point at about one minute – but it’s probably designed to be played in snippets at a club with other things going on around it. Fine, if you’re a DJ in a club, doesn’t work for radio or home consumption however.

One Response to Rihanna – Rude Boy

We saw way ages ago how Boyz II Men played the role of the sensitive guys that women wish men really were. Like Britney Spears’ “3,” Rihanna here plays the woman that men think they want. Literally: “I want what you want.” Indie singer-songwriter acidly dissected this attitude years ago on her song “No Such Thing (As Girls Like That).” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX6l4BuQDWU

Musically, the steel drums are a nice touch, and the autotune is still annoying, but perhaps in Rihanna’s case a necessary evil.
