First Hit #1: May 1, 2010
Credit is always a tricky business. B.o.B is the credited artist on the track, with Bruno Mars getting the feature spot, but Mars is really the hero of the song. Not anything against B.o.B, there’s nothing wrong with his verses and he’s certainly a constant present on the song, but it’s the chorus that sells it, and the chorus is all Mars, and it’s Mars’ voice that really pushes the song forward and gives it its form. One could even argue that this is where Mars’ career took off, and it doesn’t take long before he begins to take the headline spot on his music. Mars is also part of the production team on the song with the Smeezingtons. So why is this B.o.B feat. Bruno Mars, rather than Bruno Mars feat. B.o.B? Well, the song appears on B.o.B’s album, that’s the only explanation for it.
Still, credit to both men for making a nice, light-hearted little song about love, devotion and how great a specific woman is, even if it’s implied that the relationship isn’t on the steadiest foundation at several points. It’s still a nice little song, a breezy spring hit.
