Rihanna feat. Drake – What’s My Name?

First Hit #1: November 20, 2010

It could be argued that hookup songs are at least getting somewhat more sophisticated, but it’s not like they had a tall hill to climb to make that claim. What’s My Name is lead by a woman, apart from the Drake verse that opens the song, and it’s issuing a challenge rather than just pointing out physical aspects that are appealing. It’s instead about bedroom ability, mostly oral sex, so at least we’ve progressed from beauty show to talent competition. Honestly, I’m being unduly unkind, it’s fine for what it is, a song about hooking up that finally offers more evidence that Rihanna can be a compelling vocalist, provided that she keeps the auto tune machine in the closet and puts some effort into it. Drake is fine, his verse has some pretty terrible lines – square root of 69 line in particular, a reference which couldn’t possibly turn anyone on – but he doesn’t outright embarrass himself and then quickly gets out of the way. It’s not a special song, but maybe if this is our middle-of-the-road pop single a rising tide is finally lifting some boats.

Agreed, a more interesting song musically than the last couple, though Drake could have been replaced by just about anybody, and the song would have been none the worse. Well, not 50 Cent, but almost anybody.
