Right Said Fred – I’m Too Sexy

First Hit #1: February 8, 1992

Ever make a joke that goes too far? A suggestion to go to Amsterdam, Sk to get hookers and suddenly you’re wandering around the streets of the small hamlet wondering how the hell you got there.* That’s what I’m Too Sexy feels like, it started as a dumb joke and then suddenly Right Said Fred is famous internationally for all the things he’s too sexy for. It’s really not a song that has much going for it, it’s just a whiff of Casiotone and a cycle of too sexy lyrics, the joke can barely sustain itself. But, for whatever reason, 1992 thought it was hilarious, possibly aided along by a weird obsession with models that cropped up in the early part of the decade. Truth be told, it is kind of funny, even if the joke doesn’t quite sustain itself and eventually wore quite thin, it’s clear that the band is enjoying their weird breakthrough and the sheer ridiculousness of the whole thing. Still, it might be a case where you just had to be there.

*True story.

Everything about the vocals (lyrics, melody, and delivery) place this song firmly in the novelty camp, but the underlying beats belong to a big hit of some sort. Who cares if they only spend $20 making the video? (probably) Who needs a budget when you’ve got a rockin’ body?
